Microsoft Copilot is approved for academic use. It is available to USask students, faculty, and staff and is accessible through PAWS.

What is Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft Copilot is a Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) chatbot developed by Microsoft. It uses large language models to generate responses to user prompts.

For more information on what GenAI is and how it can be used to support teaching and learning, see the GenAI webpage.

What is the purpose of Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft Copilot is a generative AI assistant that can respond to questions and prompts, generate and revise content, and search publicly available information on the web.

Microsoft Copilot is approved for use by faculty, administrative staff, and students. It is accessible via PAWS under the channel name ‘AI Tools’. (USask NSID login required)

Why use Microsoft Copilot?

  • Microsoft Copilot serves as a “thinking partner” to generate ideas, written text, and images. For teaching and learning, it can be effective at generating ideas for learning outcomes, assessments, activities, teaching examples, and more.
  • Microsoft Copilot references the sources when web responses are used in its response.
  • USask has an enterprise license through Microsoft. Access the tool via PAWS or log in directly using your NSID.
  • Your data is protected when logged into the enterprise license. (Look for the green ‘Protected’ disclaimer beside your user icon.)
  • No history of conversations is kept. User inputs and Copilot outputs are not used to train GenAI models.
  • Microsoft does not claim intellectual property rights to either the user input or the Copilot output.

Learning Technology Ecosystem (LTE) Principles

Microsoft Copilot most directly address these LTE goals:

Designed for reflection and growth - Learning is refined and extended through prompted and supported opportunities to focus on understanding and next steps.

Designed for students who are remixing or creating - Learning is most effective when systems are designed to help learners find, create, and/or repurpose significant content for the value of themselves and others.

Best Practices

  • Review the GenAI Literacy Framework to guide appropriate GenAI tool use for you and your students.
  • Complete the USask AI Literacy Tutorial and ask your students to complete it as well to develop a shared understanding of responsible and effective GenAI use.

DO

DON'T

Round logo - Office of Sustainability USask Use Copilot mindfully by considering the environmental impact of each interaction. GenAI tools like Copilot require significant resources to operate.

Round logo - Office of Sustainability USask Don't overuse Copilot for tasks that could be done more effectively by other means. Consider whether AI is the best tool for the job before using a GenAI tool.

Round logo - Office of Sustainability USask Delete files when they are no longer being used. When you upload a file into Microsoft Copilot, it creates a copy in a OneDrive folder called “Microsoft Copilot Chat Files”.

Don’t upload work produced by others, such as copyrighted material or student assessments.

Interact with Copilot as a thinking partner by prompting it to generate and give feedback on ideas.

Don’t use as a GenAI plagiarism detector.

Use Copilot to help generate learning outcomes.

Use Copilot to help generate questions and assessment tasks.

Use an effective prompting strategy to get the results you're looking for in the least amount of time.

Create new text content and to proofread text.

Generate free-to-use images for classroom and academic presentations, where appropriate, while considering copyright and attribution requirements.

Provide relevant context and clear instructions when prompting, and refine prompts as needed.

Verify the accuracy of the output.

Cite the use of Copilot when used to assist in creating academic materials.

Follow USask requirements when deciding what information or files are appropriate to provide to Copilot.

Tool Evaluation

Technologies are evaluated based on their alignment with the Learning Technologies Ecosystem Principles.  Click to see explanations of each principle and a justification of the rating. You can also view a complete blank rubric to see more details or read about the assessment process.

Learning must be found easily at any time, and all learners and teachers have equitable access, regardless of culture, language, ability etc.

Rating: Works Well

  • Accessibility standards:
    • Copilot is designed to work with screen readers. It uses text and speech to communicate with users, and does not rely on visual cues or gestures. Responses are formatted in clear and structured ways, using markdown elements and code blocks when appropriate.

  • Cost of use for USask students:
    • Copilot is available to USask students, faculty, and staff at no additional cost through their USask account.

  • Platform/device:
    • Copilot can be accessed through a web browser and supported Microsoft applications and mobile experiences.

  • Offline Access:
    • The core functionality of Copilot requires internet access.

Learning is a process of meaning-making, constructed through learning with others, and as a part of an intentional, deliberate system within a course and across experiences.

Rating: Serious Concerns

  • Collaboration:
    • Copilot is primarily designed for individual interaction with the AI and does not itself provide a collaborative learning environment.
  • Sharing:
    • There is no specific sharing functionality or integration with Canvas.

Learning is refined and extended through prompted and supported opportunities to focus on understanding and next steps.

  • Reflection and revision:
    • Copilot supports iterative conversations in which learners can ask follow-up questions, request explanations or feedback, reconsider ideas, and revise their work. When intentionally incorporated into learning activities, it can support reflection, formative feedback, and identification of next steps.

Learning is refined and extended through prompted and supported opportunities to focus on understanding and next steps.

  • Archiving, saving, and exporting data:
    • Copilot-generated content can be copied and saved in other applications. Copilot interactions may also be retained according to Microsoft's enterprise data protection and organizational policies.

  • Data privacy and ownership:
    • Microsoft does not claim intellectual property rights to either the user input or the Copilot output.
    • When users access Copilot with their USask work or school account, enterprise data protection applies.
    • Prompts and responses are not used to train the underlying foundation models.
    • Users should follow USask Data Handling Guidelines for AI when deciding what information or files are appropriate to provide to Copilot.
  • Bias
    • Copilot may produce biased, inaccurate, or incomplete responses. Users should critically evaluate generated content and verify information using appropriate sources.
  • Sign Up/Sign In:
    • Access via PAWS using your USask Microsoft account.

  • Customization:
    • Users can direct and refine responses through prompts, follow-up questions, and the context they provide.

Learners need to work in a system that is fluid and requires a minimum number of steps in systems that are intuitive and integrated.
